Has anyone had an abused puppy?

My little girl was dumped on the side of the road and had obviously suffered abuse. She was 4 months when she was found and was scared of everything. One year on she is more confident but barks at new people (mainly males)and won't go near them. Recently she has started having "freak outs" where she has to go hide under the bed for a while which she hasn't done since she was a baby. Does anyone have any advice or have been in a similar situation?

Clear pack order and a strong confident Alpha (you) will help any dog - but particularly one that has experienced abuse in the past. Being "soft" on a dog that has experienced abuse reinforces insecurity. Be strong, firm and fair.

Reward desirable behaviour with praise and also show displeasure of undesirable behaviour (I have found a guttural growl followed by refusing to make eye contact is sufficient for many - but is does depend upon breed and personality). "Disrupt" undesirable behaviour if you can - a well timed clap or call of her name (or both) followed by praise/reward for paying attention to you instead of her intentions.

Do not pet or fuss over a dog that is displaying behaviour that is unwanted - doing so is unhelpful. Timing is everything. Perhaps you might like to consider an Obedience class - the experience is a great confidence builder and helps you work together as a team. I wish you all the very best - both of you.
