Confused 18 month old

hi everyone,

We have a bit of a problem with our 18month old Thai ridgeback pup. When he tries to mount our girl mastiff he gets all the motions etc right but he is facing the wrong way and is trying to hump her shoulders.

We try and get him to turn around but he loses interest. We are terribly confused over this as when a neighbours male dog was straying ( about 6 months ago) onto our property our boy mounted him correctly.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as we are stumped. Thank you

bein the boss perhaps?

hey there,
Sometimes when a dog mounts another it is not an attempt at mating but rather a show of dominance over that dog. That is why sometimes you may see males mounting males etc. It may be that your pup is asserting dominance over the mastiff but has no desire to mate just yet (perhaps female is not in heat/receptive?).
