What I do is cut them off the dog roll when i get them, put into an envelope and enter them when I have time.

It would be easy to write down a wrong number and as you say you haven't got the dog roll to go back to check from. I buy bulk dog rollls (like 30 rolls at a time and then freeze them) so that is what I find easier.
